  1. Arnold's MIDI Player - Quick start
  2.  
  3. Required hardware and software :
  4.  
  5. • Macintosh LC or greater
  6. • System 7.1 +  the 'Macintosh Drag and Drop' extension
  7.         or  System 7.5 or  greater.

  9. WARNING
  10. With systems older than 7.5, the floating windows may be drawn like modal dialog which can cause problems…
  11.

  14. To play on the Macintosh itself (with QuickTime Music):
  15.  
  16. • the 'QuickTime' extension (2.0 or better)
  17. • the 'QuickTime Musical Instruments' extension
  18.  
  19. To play on an external MIDI device (with the Apple MIDI Manager)
  20.  
  21. • a MIDI interface hardware (on the Printer/Modem port)
  22. • the 'MIDI Manager' extension (2.0 or better)
  23. • the 'Apple MIDI Driver'
  24. • the 'Patch Bay' application
  25.  
  26. Starting Arnold's MIDI Player
  27.  
  28. The first time the program is launched, the 'preferences' window is shown at startup. You can later open this window to change your setting by choosing 'Preferences' in the 'File' menu.

  30. • if you want to use QuickTime Music :
  31. - Click 'QuickTime Music'
  32. - Don't check any options
  33. - Click 'OK'
  34.  
  35. • if you want to use an external MIDI device :
  36. - Click 'Apple MIDI Manager'
  37. - Check 'PSS780 translation' if you have a non-General MIDI device that is compatible with the Yamaha PSS780
  38. - Check 'Ignore prog change in the drum channel' if you don't want any 'program change' MIDI message in the channel that plays drums (#10 for General MIDI)
  39. - Check 'Simulate volume controller with velocity' if you have an old MIDI device that doesn't know the volume controller. It will be emulated by changing note velocities when the sound level is reduced.
  40. - Click 'OK'
  41. - Launch PatchBay (this is an utility program that comes with the Apple MIDI Manager package). Make a connection between the output of Arnold's MIDI Player and the input of Apple MIDI Driver (if it doesn't exist yet).

  43. (note for power users: you can also use an external MIDI device with QuickTime…)

  45. Playing a MIDI file
  46.  
  47. • If you have System 7.5 or later (or system 7.1 + Drag and Drop extension), drag a MIDI file icon from the Finder onto the main window of Arnold's MIDI Player.

  49. • If you have System 7.1 without Drag and Drop, the first method for opening file doesn't work. In this case,  drag the MIDI file onto AMP icon in the Finder.
